Recycling grows ever more important each and every year yet it seems hard for some to understand the need to learn the 4-r method. This simple method was mainly designed to help children learn the importance and the simplicity of recycling, but it is also helpful for many adults so we will discuss it here.

The Four R’s:

1) Reduce:

The first step is to reduce the amount of waste. This is achieved by making others aware, as well as ourselves, of the products, that create the most waste, including the energy it takes to create the product. Know what your buying. Read the labels and see if products can be safely reused or recycled.

2) Reuse:

Try to find safe, innovative ways, to reuse items. That old goldfish bowl can now be used as a see-through garden to show children how roots form and grow. Just use your imagination.

3) Recycle:

Recycling is so important to our planets existence that the very planet, we call home, has been doing it since its creation. It was doing a great job until we came along and got so “smart” and technological that we just far exceeded the planets ability to keep up. Now we have to lend a hand and help the planet recover.

Recover:

To recover we must take action and reduce our waste, reuse what we can and recycle everything possible. Lastly, tell a friend.

Floating wind turbine launched

The world’s first floating wind turbine is to be towed out to sea this weekend.

Statoil’s Alexandra Beck Gjorv told the BBC the technology, the Hywind, to be put off Norway’s coast – “should help move offshore wind farms out of sight”.

And it could lead to offshore wind farms eventually being located many miles offshore, away from areas where they cause disruption, Ms Gjorv added.

This would benefit military radar operations, the shipping industry, fisheries, bird life and tourism.

“Taking wind turbines to sea presents new opportunities,” said Ms Gjorv, of Statoil’s new energy division.

“The wind is stronger and more consistent [and] areas are large.”

The Hywind, a 2.3 megawatt (MW) wind turbine built by Siemens, combines technologies from both the wind farming industry and the oil and gas sectors, and will be tested off the coast of Norway for two years.

In a similar way to how large parts of icebergs are hidden below the sea surface, the turbine has a 100 metre draft that is anchored to the seabed with cables, that can be up to 700 metres long.

Offshore wind farms cost considerably more than wind farms on land, and initially floating ones will be more expensive than static offshore installations.

But over time, insisted Ms Gjorv, the floating turbines should not cost more than fixed ones.

Statoil plans to target markets where there is both an ability to pay as well as large and growing demand for energy, she added.

Floating wind farms could later be established off both coasts of North America and off the Iberian peninsula and the coasts of Norway and the United Kingdom, she said.

Floating wind farms could provide an additional source of energy for countries that have run out of space for their onshore wind farms, or where there is not enough wind on land, Ms Gjorv added.

“The global market for such turbines is potentially enormous, depending on how low we can press costs,” she said, though she was not able to quantify it or to outline a timescale for when floating wind farms would become commercially available.

I know you read that title, and thought, “this guy is cracked”, but you would be wrong. You cannot make that kind of assumption just because you have not thought how environmental changes can be good.

If we take a few minutes and keep our minds open, there just might be something of value learned from this short article, and with that said; lets get to it.

Did you know that planting trees and shrubs around your home, can not only help to cool your home, but they will absorb carbon monoxide from the air, and this is a good change for the environment. A good change.

Pretty cool, huh? Now what other “good” environmental changes can we think up? How about recycling?

That would work. Instead of throwing away all of those plastic water bottles, thinking what is the gain in saving such a small plastic bottle -I have an answer, the “gain” is this: Did you know that the petroleum used to create that one “little” plastic water bottle, would have lit a 75watt light bulb, for 24 hours? 24 hours! So a “bottle saved, is 24 hours of light earned. I could not resist.

Now who can argue against that? But lets not stop with the water bottles, how about the 2-litre bottles? Sure you need to give them a quick rinse so they wont draw bees, and ants, while in storage, but the savings to the environment are so worth it. Actually, any plastic marked recyclable, or has a triangle on the bottom with a number 1, or a 2. These are all recyclable. All of which contain petroleum.

And, what about that Sunday newspaper, that was just thrown in the trash? Totally recyclable. Now your saving trees. So you are planting trees, and shrubs, and now you are even helping to save the trees that are already growing. You add this up and you are absorbing even more carbon monoxide. Now that definately makes for some very good environmental changes.

I did promise to keep this article short, so I am going to try to tie it up here with these final remarks.

It would be prudent to call your local recycling facility and learn exactly all they can take, because everything we are recycling is “not” going to the landfill, and once again we have discovered “how environmental changes can be good.

Today we look for more ways to save the environment than we ever have before.  You do not need to make major changes to your current life to create ways to save the environment.

Think of this as your contribution to save the environment for the future families of this world.  Families that may, or may not, be directly related to you.

Whether they are, or are not related, is really not a factor in the necessity, of your participation in finding ways to save the environment.  This is simply where we have brought ourselves in this world.

A light bulb just went off in your head, an energy-efficient light bulb for sure, and you realize that even the simplest things can make a vast change provided we take action.

Everyone has heard the old cliche` about “kiss” -Keep-It-Simple-Stupid, and that is how we can each do our part in finding ways, that each of us is comfortable with, like something as simple as changing your light bulbs to “energy-efficient” light bulbs.

Now I understand that buying all of these light bulbs, especially in a tough economy, can be difficult, but what if we realized, hey, we do not have to buy all of these, money-saving, and they are money-saving, as you will notice your light bill receding, light bulbs all at once.  Lets say we just make a point to change any bulbs that burnout with energy-efficient bulbs.

Wow! That did not hurt.  What if instead of throwing that Sunday paper in the trash each week, we decided we would start saving some trees, and the environment, by taking that paper to recycling.  What if we could start a neighborhood drive, and a few neighbors took turns collecting the old papers and taking them to recycling.

What just happened?  Not only did we save some trees, and help the environment, but we also saved some gasoline, put fewer cars on the road, less emissions, and tire tread wear, and yes, helped the environment.

This has just become a simple thing that will have lasting affects for generations to come.  But wait.  Have we thought of other simple ways to save the environment?
Lets think.

1) Buy “Energy-efficient” bulbs,

2) Collect News papers for recycling,

3) Share trips to recycling,

Wait!  What if there was even simpler ways to contribute to saving the environment?  What if we could just turn off some things?  But what?

1) Turn off that light in the room when no one is using it.

2) Turn off that TV in the room no one is in.

3) Turn off the water while your brushing your teeth.

Wow!  Just by turning some things off, we were not even using, we have found some ways to help the environment.  Lower our light bill, and our water bill in the process.  This whole save the earth campaign has really started to look achievable.

Ways to save the environment do not need to be extravagant, or make us even less comfortable, all we need to do is be conscious of the need and your mind will guide you to the path that will “save the environment”.
